The reception of A Deadly Education

The New York Times says the series is “full of magic and monsters” and called the first book, A Deadly Education, a “convincing new fantasy series.” The second book in the Scholomance trilogy is called Golden.

Naomi Novik’s Uprooted was nominated for a Hugo Award, and her series His Majesty’s Dragon won the Nebula Award. She has also been honored with the Andre Norton Award and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award.

The legacy of A Deadly Education

Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, the 2015 Nebula Award-winning novel, was one of my favorite reads of the year. I loved the story of a young woman drafted into service to a magical woodsman in order to protect her village from a deadly menace, as well as the darker themes that lurked beneath its surface. So when I heard that Novik was writing a new series, A Deadly Education, I was ecstatic.

The first book in the series, The Scholomance, was released last year to critical acclaim. Following the story of students at a school for magic where deadly creatures are used for lessons, The Scholomance is equal parts Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Golden | Jackson public library has all three books in the trilogy available for checkout.

What could have been different in A Deadly Education?

With the release of the new movie adaptation of A Deadly Education, fans of the original book series by Naomi Novik are wondering what could have been different. Many changes were made in order to condense the story into a two-hour film, but some fans feel that certain elements were lost in translation.

For starters, in the books, the school is called Scholomance, whereas in the movie it is simply referred to as “the school.” Additionally, the character of Jackson is given much more screen time in the movie than he is in the books. In fact, his role is significantly expanded, and he even has a romantic subplot with one of the other characters.

fan-favorite character from the books, librarian Miss Mabel Gray, is noticeably absent from the film. Other changes include the location of the school (moved from upstate New York to Massachusetts), and the addition of new characters such as teacher Ms. Lewis and student Peggy Green.

Overall, while diehard fans of the book series may be disappointed with some of these changes, they should still enjoy seeing their favorite characters brought to life on the big screen.
