There is a lot of talk about creativity these days.

Creativity stimulates innovation, inspires new ideas, enriches our lives and connects us with others.  This is all well and good, but schools and educators are struggling to find ways to be more creative.

Since creativity is individual and manifests itself differently in each person, it becomes difficult to understand how the creative potential of students can be unlocked in educational systems that are fixated on tests and standards. Unfortunately, there is no perfect top-down solution. Creative teaching begins and ends with creative teachers. Fortunately, creative teachers can be encouraged.

Here are three ingredients to nurture creative teachers.

3 The germ of the creative classroom

1. Consciousness

Any self-respecting math teacher would exclaim: Math is everywhere! They see geometry on a pool table, they see calculations when a machine slows down, they hear them in the tapping of a clarinet player’s fingers, they see simple mathematics when they give change in the store.

They know what math looks like in practice and in real life because they have spent time learning, practicing, and realizing that math has a lot to do with life. Creativity is no different. The creative teacher knows what creativity looks like for him or herself and how it can manifest itself in others. A creative teacher always keeps things interesting.

2. Authorisation

Strength is not a gift that is given to you; strength comes from within.

Every human being is full of virtues and flaws. The empowered person has the courage to accept themselves as they are and chooses to think from a growth perspective.  The growth mindset says that creativity breeds more creativity. The growth mindset says you can learn to be more creative. The growth mindset states that you can create an environment in which creativity flourishes.

3. Practice

Here’s the punch line. It’s not enough to spend hours every day reading about creativity or scouring Pinterest. Creativity requires going inward. It gets confusing.  This requires some forward force. Yet there is a real joy in creative practice. The creation of something, no matter how insignificant, changes something inside. He’s starting a fire.

One way to start a creative practice is to do a little copying. Children do it instinctively. They circle letters, repeat film phrases (sometimes with perfect intonation) and song lyrics. Copying allows someone to get used to it. Many great artists studied first as sophomores and copied their masters.

The next step is called remixing. The art of remixing is to take something that already exists and transform it in a new way. It could be a song, it could be black poetry, it could be an enhancement to a coffee cup. A remix differs from a copy in that you put something of yourself into the mix. It’s like a tribute to the original artist, but with a twist.

Remix inspires creativity and serves to inspire others. The viral videos that appear every day are proof of that: Parents, colleagues and children dance, synchronise and sing along to the remixes.

The final way for a teacher to practice creativity is to combine. An excellent example of this combination is Steve Jobs, who combined the idea of a graphical interface with the idea of a computer as a household appliance.  This combination resulted in the incredibly successful Macintosh computer.

Combinations are powerful forms of creativity. Unlikely pairs can often produce interesting results. It often takes trial and error to find the right combination, but as the saying goes, there is no glory in practice, but no glory without practice.

It is said that we are all born creative, but in today’s world this can get buried and trampled on. Creativity flourishes in classrooms where there is courage, awareness, and a culture that supports creative practices. This courage, awareness and culture begins with the teacher. When teachers ignite their own inner fire, it serves as a beacon for others.
